Procession of Notre-dame d'Ittre (Ittre) PDF Print
A superb costumed religious procession, accompanied all along a course unchanged since 1384 by a multitude of horsemen, this not-to-be-missed event in the life of the residents of Ittre represents not only the most important procession in the region, but also has a somewhat odd special feature...

On 15 August, Assumption Day, this pilgrimage that has proceeded since 1384 along a traditional course through the surrounding countryside is held. After a morning mass, the procession is led by horsemen and followed by a number of the faithful accompanying the statue of the Virgin. If you are present at this procession you cannot fail to notice that the statue of the Virgin is borne by women only. The origin of this special feature goes back to the Second World War, when on 15 August enemy planes flew over the procession, causing the men to flee. Since this memorable day, women have continued to carry the Virgin.
After several stops there is a spectacular re-entry, followed by a fair, concerts and dances until the wee hours of the morning.
