A product of the imagination of Jules Leclercq, a Tubize artist and merchant, the ‘mascot’ of Tubize took advantage of the official inauguration of the Grand Place of the city in 2006 to reveal to the residents his rubicund face…Jules Leclercq was very likely inspired by the original text original written in 1929 by Joseph Demeur to give his Betchard, a vainglorious little prankster, his mocking airs, forever personifying the sobriquet: "Pauf et glorieux, Betchard et mauvais païeux" – "poûve et glorieux, Betchard et monvé payeû": ("Poor and vain, mockers and poor payers"). The winner of the competition organised in 1995 by the Municipal Administration of Tubize who wanted to give a face to the Betchard, Jules Leclercq and the residents of Tubize had to wait until 2006 to see with their own eyes their mascot take pride of place in the restored Grand Place of the city. Since 2006, the time of the official inauguration of the completely redesigned Grand Place, this new illustrious resident of Tubize, loyal to his legendary reputation, welcomes passersby with a cheeky smile. |
