The Simone Tower, also called the Devil’s Tower, was for many years the premises of the League of Crossbowmen (Serment des arbalétriers), one of the civilian bodies charged with defending the ramparts of the city. Renovated in 2006, this tower is now the last testimony to the surrounding wall, which included at least nine. A mighty fortification 2.50 m thick, bordered by partially flooded moats outside, reinforced with 8 m-wide embankments inside and studded with towers, protected Nivelles in the Middle Ages. The Devil’s Tower, also called the Simone Tower, dating from the 12th century, is the sole preserved testimony to this. Inside, the guardroom, vaulted and pierced by arrow slits, now houses a relief map of the city of Nivelles as it looked around 1600, defended by its fortifications of ramparts and moats. The tower is now accessible during a guided visit of the city of Nivelles. Guided visits are possible for groups only, by reservation. This visit is part of a city visit and can be conducted in French, Dutch, German or English, as you choose. Length of the visit: approximately 1h 30 min. "Discover the Simone Tower" |
