The Forge Museum or 'Forge-Bonheur', as you prefer, this last survivor of the 8 forges previously active, is an opportunity for some to recapture the work atmosphere, thanks to the various equipment exhibited, while others, newlyweds, come to receive the famous "Recette du Bonheur" (Recipe for Happiness) from the hands of the blacksmith. The only survivor of the 8 forges of the village of Ittre, this 1701 building has kept intact the appearance it had in 1957 when the last blacksmith stopped work. Still in operating condition, all its equipment can be seen, such as the hearth, the two-chambered bellows, the anvil and the chute into which the blacksmith led the horse to be shod. But the Forge-Museum of Ittre naturally becomes the “Forge du Bonheur” when newlyweds receive a 'Recette du Bonheur' and a horseshoe from the blacksmith during a colourful ceremony broadly inspired by the village of Gretna Green in Scotland, where the famous film “Les grandes vacances”, with the no less well-known Louis De Funès, was shot. Open: from February to November, every first Sunday of the month from 2 pm to 5:30 pm. Demonstrations and activities by blacksmiths. Free entrance. Guided visits possible for groups by appointment only. Length of the visit: 1hr "Discover the Forge Museum or 'Forge du Bonheur'" |
