A source of jobs and raw materials since the 17th century, the porphyry quarry of Quenast has affixed its label to a number of paving stones on our Belgian roads. This open-air quarry is among the largest in Europe, with an area of 140 hectares, and a depth in places of 125 m. Porphyry has been quarried there since the 17th century. The sizable porphyry layer extends from Quenast to Lessines. This very hard rock traditionally served to make the famous Belgian road paving stones. At present, the porphyry quarried is intended for ballast. Guided visits to the quarry starting from the Museum of Porphyry for groups by appointment only. Length of the visit: 1hr - 1hr 30 min. Note: the showing of a DVD at the Museum of Porphyry (Grand Moulin of Arenberg) and the explanations of the various guides who walk you through the site will show you the unique features of porphyry and the development of this operation still underway.
