The Grand Moulin (Big Mill)Dating probably from the 13th century, the Grand Moulin was rebuilt toward the middle of the 19th century after a fire, and now houses exhibitions in its various storeys. The mill has kept its impressive machinery, operated by a paddle wheel 7.50m in diameter. On the first floor, the Museum of Porphyry and of the quarries retraces the history of this stone mined from the big quarry in Quenast and the lives of those who worked there. Illustrated by showing of a DVD, the explanations of the various guides who walk you through the site will show you even more realistically the unique features of porphyry and the development of this operation still underway. Exhibitions from the beginning of March to mid-December, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 1 pm to 6 pm. Guided visits by appointment for groups. Museum of Porphyry: year-round by appointment from 9 am to 5 pm. Length of the visit: 1hr. Guided visits of the quarry starting from the Museum of Porphyry for groups, by appointment only. Length of the visit: 1hr 45 min. "Discover the Arenberg Mills" |
