Rebecq's 'Barbar' and 'Bonne Espérance' |
Both specialities of Rebecq and brewed, along with a number of other beers, at the Lefebvre Brewery in Quenast, the 'Barbar' is a pale ale with a honeyed taste, while the 'Bonne Espérance' is an abbey beer.
'Barbar' owes its honeyed taste to the brewing traditions still used at the Lefebvre brewery to produce certain beers. For centuries, in fact, the only sweetener known was honey, and it was widely used by brewers, who combined it with various herbs. Even today, the methods of centuries past are a standard. So among a broad range of beers, such as fruit-flavoured beers, wheat beers, abbey beers, Newton, and Hopus, one finds Barbar, a honey-based pale ale resulting from top fermentation. |
