A carnival in the middle of August! A strange idea, you say? But it happens in Virginal (Ittre), where during "Virginal en Fête" the grand official outing of the 'gilles' (jesters) of Virginal, accompanied by their "sister" companies, takes place. On the last Sunday of August, the giant processional figures of Virginal, Gus de Samme and Jeannette del Bruyère, mingle with the circle of the 'Gilles' (Jesters) of Virginal, created a good twenty years ago, to take part in the popular jubilation of the great fair known by the name "Virginal en Fête". Gus and Jeannette open the fair, leaving with the ‘gilles' for zany cavalcades that end with the rondeau and the burning of straw figurines, a moment eagerly awaited by a very lively crowd. |
