The Roman Païs and its 'giants'
Already on record in 1367, Argayon of Nivelles, the famous processional giant of Nivelles, had to be patient, as only in 1645 did he officially marry, before welcoming some time later little Lolô, a big baby pampered by his parents as well as the population. Proud of its giants, Nivelles can boast of having the oldest human processional giants of the former Netherlands.
On a certain Saturday at the end of the summer in 2005, a day enshrined in the heart of every resident of Ittre, Dolf d'Yitte and Doflin d'Yitte chose to join their destinies amidst the cheers of the inhabitants of the village and the fond gaze of their Virginal ‘elders’, Gus de Samme and Jeannette del Bruyère.
Minie Chichile and Napoléon, inspired by local figures of days gone by, somewhat forgotten but crafted from memories and affection, were both born in 1981 from the enthusiasm of certain residents of Tubize for their local history and the desire to share with everyone the warmth of folklore as it is experienced in the Roman Païs…
Born in the guise of the god Momus, driven out of Olympus for his incessant mockery and sarcasm, the Rebecq giant Momus came down to earth…
The Roman Païs and its carnivals
Since the dawn of time, people have surrounded themselves with traditions believed to promise fertility, fecundity and happiness for them and their families on the one hand, and to protect them from evil spirits on the other hand. And Nivelles obviously is not an exception to the rule...
A carnival in the middle of August! A strange idea, you say? But it happens in Virginal (Ittre), where during "Virginal en Fête" the grand official outing of the 'gilles' (jesters) of Virginal, accompanied by their "sister" companies, takes place.
Even if the carnival of Braine-le-Château is no longer the largest or the most colourful, it has no reason to be jealous of the other carnivals of the region, as the fervour of the 'gilles' (jesters) at the pillory is able to carry along in its wake all the residents who happily participate in their carnival festivities, which take place the third Sunday of Lent.
Organised for the first time only a few years ago, the carnival of Saintes (Tubize) is essentially reserved for children...
On the second Sunday before Easter, the effervescence is at its height in Rebecq, a pretty little village in the Roman Païs, as Momus, the Rebecq giant straight out of Greek mythology, gets ready for the carnival...
The Roman Païs and its mascots
What an odd little man that is, with features that nonetheless seem strangely familiar…
A product of the imagination of Jules Leclercq, a Tubize artist and merchant, the ‘mascot’ of Tubize took advantage of the official inauguration of the Grand Place of the city in 2006 to reveal to the residents his rubicund face…
The Roman Païs and its processions
Every year on 29 September, the day of Saint Michael, or the following Sunday, the Saint Gertrude Tour is held. Highly anticipated, with a fame that has now considerably surpassed the "aclote" borders and those of the country, this trek of approximately 15 km across fields leads more and more participants in the footsteps of the abbesses and canonesses who, at the time, left to meet with farmers, the sick and the poor.
A Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage, the Tour Sainte-Renelde means three days of festivities for the residents of Tubize and its surroundings…
A superb costumed religious procession, accompanied all along a course unchanged since 1384 by a multitude of horsemen, this not-to-be-missed event in the life of the residents of Ittre represents not only the most important procession in the region, but also has a somewhat odd special feature...
If you want to attend the sole annual excursion of Notre-Dame de la Consolation in Ittre, don’t miss the departure of the Procession on the first Sunday of July.
The day of Sunday, 2 July (or the following Sunday) begins with a mass at the Notre-Dame-au-Bois Church in the pretty town of Braine-le-Château. The faithful then go in a procession to the chapel of the same name.
On Sunday 3 May or the following Sunday…
In the spring, on Easter Monday more precisely, the relics of Saint Véron, the patron of Lembeek, near Tubize, are carried from altar to altar in a military march, one of a number in the "Entre-sambre-et-Meuse" region…
The Roman Païs and its brotherhoods
A jewel of gastronomy, folklore and, near and far, Nivelles culture, the Brotherhood of the Târte al djote (don’t forget the circumflex!), created on 21 September 1980 and composed of a maximum of 55 members grouped around the 'Grand Bailly', has the aim of preserving and promoting the age-old recipe for the celebrated tarte aclote.
Award of quality labels for the Târte al Djote (Nivelles)
3 October 2009. This date means nothing to you? Nonetheless, it’s the date on which the brand-new Sisterhood of the Secrets of Dame Gertrude came into being in Nivelles.
The famous tarte au Crastofé, a gastronomic speciality of Ittre, was originally created to mark the renovation of the chapel of Notre-dame de la Consolation; some people had the idea to revive it based on the amalgamation of several variants of old recipes found here and there,...
Created on 26 September 2008, the Confrérie de la bière du Betchard was officially recognised in Tubize during an induction ceremony, thus marking the beginning of a great adventure for the Grand Bailly and his Knights…
